ROGER JANES

ROGER JANES   Born England 1942             Died   Sydney Australia 7 March 2001

Roger Immigrated to Australia with his family when he was eight years old.  He had a passion for music and art, with him being a noted artist around Australia.  Roger became a member of the Yarra Yarra Jazz Band in 1966 and moved to Sydney later that year to do a European tour with Graeme Bell. It was arranged that Roger would Later team up with the Yarra Yarra Band in Europe in early 1968.  This band did a world tour that lasted for two years.  While playing with the Yarras he met Randi Angela Lohr and in January 1970 they got married, later when back in Australia they had two boys Lars and Tor.   In 1976 Roger left the Yarras and moved to Sydney to join the Geoff Bull Olympia Band, Later taking over their regular gig at the Unity Hall Hotel calling his band the Roger Janes Band.  Roger also took up slide guitar and played mainly as a duet with Peter Anson on vocals and Guitar.   Roger played with Tom Bakers Chicago Seven since it was founded as well as Geoff Bulls Band.  It came as a shock to have such a talented musician and singer die so early due to an accident.

Whatever Roger did was done with a rare intensity.  His passion for life.  An original trombone voice that was big and warm also describes everything he did.  Roger traveled the world with his trombone, delighting audiences in Europe, Japan the United States, New Zealand, Africa and all over Australia.  Fortunately, there are a number of recordings that he did as leader and others as sideman that give us a glimpse of his huge talent.
